Chen Yan has died countless times.

Every time he breathes his last, he awakens again—reborn somewhere along his long life, his cultivation and memories perfectly preserved and stacked upon themselves.

Yet reincarnation is not salvation.

It is a deeper, darker form of despair.

“Senior Brother… what lies at the end of the Immortal Path?”

Chen Yan no longer knows how many times he’s answered this question.

And he has never once given the same answer.

“It’s a prison—an abyss of reincarnation from which there is no escape.” Collapse

I’ve seen way too many positive reviews about this novel, and I don’t understand how it’s even possible to keep reading it after Chapter 6.

The author literally spat in the readers’ faces just to supposedly show the “influence of fate.” But it was done so badly that it causes nothing but anger.

Readers already forgive a lot to writers of Chinese web novels, but here it feels like the author takes their readers for idiots and feeds them shit.

Thanks to the author only for the fact that this crap happened in Chapter 6, and I didn’t manage to waste too much time for nothing.

I just went back to reread Chapter 6 in order to better understand your subjective reality and make as best of an attempt as I possibly could to interpret your words in good faith in accordance with the principle of charity. However, I will honestly admit that as I am someone who enjoys this novel, unfortunately it is inevitable that I will have a cognitive bias and ulterior motives regardless of however else I might portray myself as. In spite of this, I will do my utmost to look at your perspective more objectively.

The author literally spat in the readers’ faces just to supposedly show the “influence of fate.” But it was done so badly that it causes nothing but anger.

Here a lot of emotion is shown by Lexcut, using an idiomatic expression such as “the Author literally spat in the readers’ faces”. Considering the contents of chapter 6, and this situation as well as concept suddenly being introduced into the story in a foreign and alien way. It is understandable for newer readers who are less familiar with certain archetypes, cliches and tropes to be put off by this whereas older more experienced readers might be intrigued rather than annoyed due to something unexpected, unexplainable or mysterious happening. Raising questions such as what, why and how? Instead of, great frustration that my wish is not being fulfilled and that the main character isn’t Nietzsche’s wet dream and a total ubermensch.

But essentially the system is indeed throwing snide remarks at our MC for every reset in the evaluation, who is of average or below average wit by the way. Overtime the MC experiences A LOT of character development due to enormous amounts of repetition and procedural knowledge. In the beginning, he is naive and makes … a lot of frustrating, silly mistakes. Eventually he even becomes foolhardy, and I have a feeling(?) that inevitably the main character’s main motivation will lead towards wanting an end, to desire the opposite of immortality … namely … death. As life can, ironically enough, be viewed as the ultimate form of suffering. If you continue reading, you might understand where I am coming from with this.

Readers already forgive a lot to writers of Chinese web novels, but here it feels like the author takes their readers for idiots and feeds them shit.

I have to admit that you are correct in that we do tend to give a lot of leniency towards chinese authors. I am indeed lowering my standards, but out of my options (of which there are very few), I stumbled upon this novel. If I wanted to, I could nitpick and find justifiable reasons for disliking a lot of novels. But the author is putting in a lot of effort, there is semanticity even to the useless padding or lengthening of chapters, so please don’t judge a book by its cover too much. Do you remember the adage, “half-empty, half full”? I’m sure you’ve also heard of bad trips and good trips, no? Depending on your

When you read a webnovel, if you go into it with a closed mind expecting certain things subconsciously, then you will inevitably feel
a visceral repulsion and disappointment when your expectations are unmet. Like you, I was actually also a little dismayed in the beginning … but then at one point, I was hooked and I wanted to know where the story would lead. This was only possible because I decided to give it a fair chance to redeem itself, as soon as I switched to MTL - the reading quality skyrocketed … and there are also so many chapters. However, what dismayed me at first were the logic and rationality of the MC, but then I put myself in his shoes and thought about my past and what I would realistically do as well. It was quite eye opening, honestly.

Thanks to the author only for the fact that this crap happened in Chapter 6, and I didn’t manage to waste too much time for nothing.
So as thus, Lexcut’s threshold was reached. We can agree to disagree. We all have our preferences, and I have a feeling Lexcut may enjoy himself a guilty pleasure of stockholm syndrome with Skinner’s boxes. Which may include some wish fulfillment, face slapping and from weak to strong, etcetera. I mean, if you read webnovels here and don’t enjoy such tropes I would have to question your presence here. I enjoy the machinations and machiavellian politics happening behind the scenes in the novel to which the MC is slowly unravelling through no merit other than time and bruteforcing as well as guidance, perhaps.

If you like philosophy, have patience - enjoy the metaphysical domain as well as likely being in the age range of 25+ with a sort of developed enough frontal cortex; and you find yourself NOT environmentally damaged by brainrot and wish fulfillment slop. Then there is a chance that this novel can surprise you a great deal. At least the first 200-400 chapters to which I have currently read.

Keep in mind that ratings are subjective, and that the vast majority of readers have a certain threshold that coincides with popularity, which doesn’t necessarily suggest quality. If you find yourself in the profile I described above (in the first paragraph), then I highly suggest you at the very least give the novel a fair try regardless of whatever its current rating might be. After all, the totality’s preferences (which at times might even seem arbitrary) can differ from yours. That totality may include or exclude you occasionally when it regards hidden gems that appeal extra to people with specific tastes.

This novel is fairly unique, and reminds me of the mystery factor that was present in the Mutated Tao, in the sense that as a fairly experienced reader who has been around reading the forums of Xianxia translations by RWX before Wuxiaworld existed… who has read far too much to the point of absurdity… to the point in which I usually pattern recognize every plot device and foreshadowing so frequently that I can accurately predict so much that the feeling of novelty is completely gone when reading. Whereas here, the novelty and excitement is present (currently at ch300-400). It does not however have the grotesque misery and suffering contained in the Mutated Tao. It does, however, arguably remain unpredictable for the time being.

I have educated guesses as to what might happen in the future. I hope that it doesn’t end up following a certain recipe where the only thing that changes are certain variables. Depending on how the novel sets it pace and decides to continue moving forward, it can either continue to edge my mind and its intellectual curiousity for what is going to happen next… or suddenly turn
out to become predictable due to the required author techniques that are often necessary for consistency when being a chinese webnovel author who has to release one or multiple chapters a day. This then often leads to certain recipes coming into play, to prevent reader’s block. It is, after all, their livelihood. However, I am hopeful that it doesn’t turn into a flop for the time being and enjoy reading it a great deal more than I perhaps should.

Start reading it from MTL from the get go, the MTL is higher quality than the human translation and it is honestly easily readable with 809+ chapters available at the moment. I also believe you’ll find plenty of comments on the MTL chapters left by others sporadically throughout. Feel free to scribe some of your thoughts regarding the novel on the stone wall of MTL as well, fellow daoist.

The impermanent MTL comment section welcomes you all. This was also the first review I ever bothered writing upon seeing the rating of the novel being remarkably low.

I will note that as you reach 300+ chapters, there is a noticeable change in pacing that might feel cumbersome. But if you master the art of speed reading scriptures, where you remove your inner monologue and thoughts - and fill in the blanks with intuition. This reading technique should allow you at the very least to surpass 400 words per minute and maintain comprehension. The experienced and gifted reading daoists might even sacrifice comprehension altogether and achieve a reading speed of 1000+ wpm. However, the question is … is it still reading at that point when you likely retain and comprehend nothing? Only bothering to comprehend whatever is deemed necessary and glancing over whatever you pattern recognize as filler or padding. Mostly bothering to read passages where the main character’s name is mentioned or dialogue.

Regarding speed reading, I highly recommend chunking sentences… so you first glance at the left side of the sentence and group it together with the right side. Use your peripheral vision, don’t look at each word individually, look at the left group as a forest instead of a tree, likewise do the same for the right side. Combine the two together as a mental representation, and you will significantly reduce cognitive load. Requiring 2-3 glances a sentence instead of a microglance for each word. This should make it easier to read for longer as well.

Regarding the novel’s pacing becoming a bit cumbersome around 300+ chapters. I think it’s passable, so long as you keep a clear purpose and goal in mind. What happens after x, is it y? If not y, what happened instead? Do I want to know what happens next, am I invested? Does this excite me enough to slog through many seemingly unrelated events that for some reason later on turn out to have been absolutely necessary given the constraints of the webnovel author’s writing style? Why am I reading this if it doesn’t provide me with dopamine by exploiting certain plot devices ad nauseam in order to keep me engaged almost like a skinner’s box?

Also, I should mention that the main character’s golden finger is accompanied with zero natural talent and average wit. Making his decisionmaking and behavior far more understandable, since he relies on procedural knowledge gained through his countless lives. I love seeing his temperament and disposition change in a way that feels realistic in a perspective that regards nature vs nurture, and how the persona or personality of sorts is a generated product of its environment. I hope to see the main character lose his mind, and end up in a dead end where he suffers and ends up a mere shell of a human being. /crosses fingers

Pretty decent novel way better than other cultivation slop here, after having read 500+ chapters I can safely say that, the author clearly has a lot plot points and mysteries clearly planned out and they nicely flow into the story.

I will personally recommend ignoring the translations and directly just reading the mtl the quality honestly the same here, you won't be missing out on anything, the realm names might end up being being different sometimes but I have noticed that same issue in the actual translation as well, so just go with the mtl.

Ok this is above avg novel. Mc reincarnate every death with scores and rewards, there is no fixed spawn point. World building and characters are ok but not over the top. Sometimes mc act like a clueless idiot and sometimes very smart. Some of reincarnation just fell like filler chapter and few times author did annoy me to death with keeping mystery for no reason at all. Overall it is a decent read till now, I am entering MTL for now...Wish me luck pepeg_15 pepeg_24

    Yummy slop soup.

Repeating yourself and missing the obvious. Plus predestination? Oh and lets explain something you don't need to know. It has no point to the story either but will consume most of each chapter just so author hits word count! The chapters typically can be summed up in like 1 to 4 bullet points, and the system is a condescending and useless afterthought that randomly gifts you crap while being insulting - some truly Chinese system.

    TLDR:
Great idea, shitass intrigue. Don't waste your time.

This is high quality repeating plot novel.

A Timeloop novel where save point is arbitrarily moved. MC is not stupid, but the blueprint of the novel is unchanging.
