Amid the steam of the industrial revolution, mysteries surge beneath the surface. Cults and secret societies seek the extraordinary in the shadows, while hidden gods gaze upon humanity from the heavens.

Forbidden knowledge, sacrificial rituals, and forgotten histories—mystery is everywhere.

Dorothy, unexpectedly transported to this increasingly bizarre world, discovers that to survive and move forward, she must adhere to one principle:

Knowledge is power.

And forbidden knowledge?

That’s an even greater power! Collapse

The premise is fine, but the writing is drawn out.

The author stretches the chapters unnecessarily, with several that could easily be combined into one. Information already covered is often repeated and rephrased in the following chapters.

The story also explains every decision the MC makes, as if you're 4, telling you in an overly explicit, step-by-step way. Overall, it makes the story less engaging than it could be.

I also wouldn't place this on the level of LoM, since the setting is a mash-up of Cultist Simulator and other influences.

If you can't wait for the translation and also want to read the rest, it's about chapter 264, here it is:
    https://www.trxs.cc/tongren/6951/115.html
It's readable, but the interface and options are "insufficient" and the website has a bad design, so I recommend you use some kind of dark mode. Also, if you're going to translate, I recommend using Google Chrome. Other browsers may not translate to Chinese, so pay attention to which chapter it is, as you can click on it and go to the last page. Enjoy!

Honestly I don't get the point of why author felt the need to gender bend this character other than to offhand mention it in the first chapter I'm at chapter 140 now and it hasn't come up again. It's strange.

The author is smart. Women looking for a fresh breath of air will fall for a byte, supposedly a female MC.

And men who need a dose will pass the natural barrier of "phew, gender bender", and after the first few chapters they won't notice the difference, because the author is also a man.

As a result, more people read his book = profit!

This is just to attract attention and some kind of highlight. In the book itself, apart from the first chapter, this is not mentioned anymore and there are no jokes or situations on this basis. There is no romance here either.

If you liked Lord of the Mysteries, this book might catch your interest—but don’t expect the same depth. It has similar dark, mysterious vibes with secret powers and occult elements, but it leans more on fast pacing and less on intricate worldbuilding.

Dorothy is always prepared—sometimes too much. Solutions often fall into place a bit too easily, which can feel like plot armor. While LotM builds tension and mystery slowly, Dorothy’s Forbidden Grimoire moves quickly, trading depth for action.

In short: A fun, fast read with a competent protagonist and an intriguing world, but lacking the complexity and stakes that make LotM so compelling.

So overall I would give it a 7.5/10

This is honestly really good, the magic system is kinda similar to lotm but stories definitely have thoughts put into them. Don't mind about gender Bender tag. In a world full of freaky things and unnatural superpowers. Gender Bender should be least of your concerns lol.

If you are going to make the mc a female, just stick to it, dont start as male and become female... Unless the premise of the novel is focused on the gender bending, there isn't much of a plot point in gender bending...

It’s probably similar to Millennium Witch, where the author intends to write a female mc but there are some people who never touch female mc novels, so the author adds in a plot-irrelevant genderbend
Just ignore the tag and consider it a female mc novel, it’s a good one
Helps nicely with LotM withdrawal, too (so do Deep Sea Embers and Throne of Magical Arcana)
