Really and truly, the LGBT's who can't express themselves irl are coming out the woodworks to express themselves as novel characters. I don't particularly care too much about that, but...

9/10 times an MC being gender bent doesn't add to the story and just- aaah I can't be bothered to get into this.

I'mma continue reading A Regressor's Tale of Cultivation, goodbye~ welldone

The proper abbreviation is RTOC and yes it's worth reading, the story is somewhat on the level of LOTM.

I'll try to be brief, but based on my entirely subjective experience, with sources drawn directly from my own meager imagination, I believe that a good portion of the "Gender-Shifting" works we have today are due to the predominant audience being those who prefer to identify with a male character. With this in mind, authors seeking to appeal to this audience have joined forces with another: perverts and those with certain fetishes, who would like, and wouldn't mind, glimpsing or reading a female body with a male mind. And since fantasy works go beyond the "thought/brain," this is where the psychology of the soul comes into play (it doesn't exist, it's just an example). In this state, readers wouldn't feel much resistance to seeing scenes or works with this type of plot. After all, there's already a soul, it's a fantasy work, so why limit my imagination?

I get your point. Gender-bender stories do often lean on the idea of a male audience identifying with a male mind in a female body. But I think calling it just ‘perverts and fetishes’ oversimplifies things. A lot of readers come to these works for different reasons: curiosity, novelty, exploring identity, or just enjoying the fantasy element.

At the end of the day, art isn’t meant to appeal to everyone. What feels like a fetish to one person might feel like self reflection or just fun escapism to someone else. Beauty and meaning are always in the eye of the beholder, that’s what makes art so varied and interesting.

No worries, I get what you meant. It’s easy for tone to come across differently in writing than intended.

Tbh I just want to see independent female mc that is actually good. Most series with female mc have them heavily overshadowed by the male lead like "what the mc is at the highest realm of cultivation with heaven tier talent? Nah the male lead already surpass all realm and can kill mc with one finger". It also doesn't help that the mc is ALWAYS a damsel in distress. Honestly each time I read those novels makes me want to punch the author in the face (jk).

You say the female lead is always a damsel in distress but that just means you clearly aren’t aware of around 60% of female lead stories.

Most stories I find with female lead are actually pretty f#cking nice. And usually quite a badass of a character. Not a random damsel in distress. So I’m not sure where you’ve been looking.

Then again, as of recently I’ve mostly read English originals which do tend to differ a lot from eastern translated work.

I’d recommend Beneath the Dragoneye Moons, Azarinth Healer, Metaworld Chronicles among others for English Originals. They’re all on Amazon.

This seems unique and interesting but not totally unheard of. Any poison testers? And again why do authors of fmc books always make it a gender bender? It's completely unnecessary and almost always adds absolutely nothing to the plot.

It's a great novel, I read the mtl like a month ago. iirc the gender bending part has no significance to the story whatsoever

Authors, if you want a female protagonist, just make a female protagonist from the start. Why does it need to be "Gender Bender"
Usually in these types of novels it's only mentioned at the start and never mentioned again. Literally why?
It's such a small thing, but it subtly changes the entire vibe of the novel.

Its because people won’t touch it otherwise. A lot of readers won’t even glance at a FML novel. So a gender bend, does attracts a bit of that audience.
