Deep below the earth’s surface, a mystifying subterranean seascape lurks, an archipelago bathed in inky blackness where suspense and horror hold court. Here lie strange islands and even stranger monsters, far beyond the realms of human imagination. In this domain, mankind is far from dominant; instead, madness and death rule supreme.

Pleading for mercy from the unknown creatures of the deep only leads to a slow, tortured existence. The trapped survivors gradually distort, losing what made them human, both physically and mentally, to the gloom as they remain trapped in this eternal obscurity. Their only hope? A perilous expedition into uncharted sea territories.

Fueled by determination, Charles embark on this daunting voyage aboard his steamship, aiming to reclaim humanity’s past glory. Together with his crew, they sought a way out of this hidden sea world, a path back to the sunlit world above, where humans once stood tall.

TL Note: I read a few comments from Chinese readers that compared this novel with Lord of Mysteries because of similar elements: Lovecraftian, western fantasy, first industrial revolution, and steampunk. However, I have yet to finish reading Lord of Mysteries to do any actual comparison, but I do think those who have enjoyed that novel would enjoy this as well. Also, the author of LotM, Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, also did a shout-out for this novel, so I guess he approves of it too? Collapse

And what, one divinity swings his tail and the empire's wiped out. There's already ppl who made powerful island kingdoms, but its never anything compared to divinities. And Charles is not vain enough to run behind such a uncertain future.

what does it matter to us readers
we would have gotten our entertainment thats what matters a
and as this is very unique world -there would have been surely fun when mc tries to expend his kingdom and finding gate to the surface world could have a side quest

No u r missing the point of this novel. The whole point, the whole reason Charles has such a hard will, is because he is determined to return back to the surface, and has no interest in ruling the subsea. Ig u make it opposite, then there's no meaning to the story. It will become just another stupid story where mc goes 'kekeke' like an idiot while no one jn the world can oppose him.

PS: I'm reading a novel currently which has lots of politics in it, which you wanted so much. The name's Kingdom's Bloodline

huh its surprising you would say that, he's one of the mc's I actually liked, I've read 100 chaps btw, and since the chaps r so long I'd say thats equivalent to 300 chaps of any other normal novel. And the author's been consistent with his character:
He's a good guy at heart, though he would indeed kill others to survive (and well as a prince there's no other way anyway). And thats remained consistent from the start till here. He doesn't care about a little (or more) inconvenience if he can save someone whom he feels like saving cuz his heart tells him to, in a way, impulsive, but thats basically why I like him

Whats the point in a cold-blooded protag who doesnt care for anyone or anything, and just schemes all his life. Thats just bland. Its like making a very nice dish, but forgetting to put salt.

              2. good world building
              3. kids r ranting about how they didnt understand or that its too long-winded (which means its well written, cuz only in well written novels do such complains arise unfortunately). And I found a really good review by some other guy who explained stuff quite well.

after reading the description of the novel, I thought that this is what I like, but no, as always, the tag harem and romance spoil everything. Oh, one more thing, why would I read a story where the main one says he wants to go home, but he's building a harem instead. if you want a story where the main character tries to return home, then you should read LOTM where the main one does not collect a harem and there is no romance.

lemme guess, u only read like 100 chaps of this novel...

if u still think the harem and romance gets in the way after reading 500 chaps or so then I'll accept it, cuz I honestly felt that the romance was almost non-existent and the harem didnt matter when the culture of the place has a lot worse stuff than a mere harem.

oh and my fav novel remains LOTM infact, but I find it hard to compare the two novels tbf. They are soo similar yet sooo different. In there Klein has no family to protect (he had but he left), while here mc does have a family,

Lmao, the MC here is more desperate to go home than Klein. The Harem here isn't even the focus of the story. Bro did you even read the novel?

yep he definitely did exactly that... while this novel is comparable to LOTM on how good it is, but u cant compare the storyline or plot, its completely different. Only commonality is that both have insanely dangerous worlds (and power systems) and in that sense Shrouded Seascape is actually a lot more dangerous.

Humans are weak whether u like it or not. U r not gonna get an academy arc where mc trains nicely, fights monsters in a somewhat protected environment. Mc is an adult, and he takes his own risk and decisions. The world is too crazy in this novel.

At the very least, there's not a single power without its downsides in the this novel. LOTM's world was a lot safer infact

One of the source materials for this novel, "sunless sea"'s world is even more bleak. There humans are literally little more than mass farmed sources of souls, albeit unknowingly by the wider society.

If you play sunless skies, go for seek the truth for more details. The game is practically an interactive novel on it's own.

I played sunless skies before and liked it but I couldn't get into sunless sea. The main reason is it's much more difficult that it feels tedious. In skies you have a difficulty slider so the game is more forgiving and I can enjoy all the story. Do you have any recommendations for games like this with dark fantasy worlds with good lore? I've tried cultist simulator recently and it's also very tedious.

Yeah. The kinda horror I like is a slow, creeping one, not the jumscare infested mess that is most horror games. Makes it hard to find good stuff.

One of the best novel I've seen.
I'm at chapter 778 and the way the mysteries are unfolded so far in this novel is mesmerizing, unlike in some novel where they try to add some unknown vocabularies to make it more mysterious.

As said in some previous reviews, If you know about the SCP Foundation, you can relate to it. But don't worry if don't know, I personally think it would be more intriguing that way.

About SCP Foundation ( not much of a spoiler tho )

I recommend you to give it a try.

Its mystery if you knew all the answers it wouldnt be this genre, you have to make your own theories about whats going even when the book tells you something is happening it might just be an Illusion that is meant to confuse/make you see it through clues. Most infos are therefore subtly hidden or not revealed at the point youve read to. One method to dispel this is to continue reading which will bring further questions and/or make your own theories about whats going on, if you dont youll probably not like it. Also skimming can be very bad sometimes.
